DESCRIPTION

This vessel was traditionally used to carry food to a monastery, an important ritual of daily life in Burma. It was either carried in the hands or women carried it on their heads. The shape of the vessel resembles a Burmese pagoda and was predominantly made of colied bamboo and then multiple layers of lacquer were applied to make a smooth surface with a high gloss finish. Some vessels were also hand carved from teak, which was plentiful in Burma. The process to make a vessel was very labor intensive and could take up to 6 months to make.
