DESCRIPTION

Door Panels with Latticework (sold in set of 4 panels). Many Chinese homes and public buildings were built of wood column and beams that supported the roof structure with screens/ doors as infill between the columns. This set of four panels could have been used as part of the exterior enclosure or as partitions dividing the internal spaces. The goal of the lattice panel was to not only to provide privacy from the street but to also reflect and refract light and to make a play between light and shadow. The geometric pattern of the screens was achieved by notching strips of wood vertically and horizontally together. Rice paper, and later glass, would have been used placed behind the lattice work to provide privacy and shelter from the weather.
