This necklace would be worn by the Kalabubus, the head hunters on Nias Island, off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. The necklace, made of coconut shell disks with a brass clasp, symbolizes masculinity, prestige and that the wearer had taken a head from another tribe, which they believed would provide protection to their own community.
