Long Painting Table with Carved Brackets and Horse Hoof Legs. Tables like this one were used in a scholar’s study, or library, for reading books, painting or writing calligraphy. The table was the anchor of the study and would be positioned in the center of the room. The educated man would indulge his creative urges by painting landscapes and village scenes on wide scrolls, rolled out flat on the table while he stood above. (As a male dominated society, women were not permitted to be scholars). This table has carved brackets on all sides, humpback stretchers on the shorter two sides as well as arching support braces in each corner under the top called “giant arm braces”. Lacquered by hand in China, using traditional techniques that take up to 60 days, this original piece of antique furniture has been carefully restored by craftsman to bring it back to its former glory as part of China's rich history.
