Medium Height Cabinet with Opening and Carved Bracket Details. Display cabinets such as this one are a cross between a cabinet and a bookshelf and were popular during the Qing period. This piece would have been used in a scholar’s study, one of the most important rooms in a Chinese residence. It is the perfect multipurpose item of furniture: used to simultaneously store and display items. The upper compartment has hand carved decorative brackets on the front and sides as well as hand carved decorative side rails. The lower compartment is closed storage with a newly made removable shelf inside. The hardware has been replaced. The back is unfinished. Lacquered by hand in China, using traditional techniques that take up to 60 days, this original piece of antique furniture has been carefully restored by craftsman to bring it back to its former glory as part of China's rich history.
