DESCRIPTION

In Bhutan, a festival is held in each district either once or twice a year called the mask dance festival. Monks wear masks and colorful costumes and re-enact significant spiritual events of the past and present. The masks represent both male and female deities that help mortals ward off evil spirits. The Bhutanese believe that during the mask dances, the deities offer power and blessings so their misfortunes are removed, and thus, their sins are purified. This miniature mask is an example of one of the life size versions worn at the festivals. Weathered over time, you can see the substrate of pressed sawdust that was then covered with layers of red and black paint.
