Designed to look and feel exquisite, these cabinets, chests, and cases also work hard. They are a refinement of George Nelson's ongoing research into storage furniture and provide a high degree of utility wherever something needs to be put away. Sixty years since they were first available, these classic pieces have been updated to employ environmentally sustainable veneers and finishing processes without compromising the original design.

In 1944, Life magazine published an extensive article detailing the Storage Wall, George Nelson's novel architectural concept for American homes that proposed to make walls thicker so that they could double as a place to put things away. The piece caught the eye of Herman Miller founder D.J. De Pree, who was searching for a design director after the sudden death of Gilbert Rohde, and Nelson soon had the job. Intent on examining the problems people faced in their homes and offices and providing new types of furniture to address those needs, Nelson's inaugural collection for Herman Miller included the Basic Cabinet Series—a standardized system of casegoods that could be combined and adapted to a variety of uses and environments.

The Storage Wall concept also provided the blueprint for 1949's Basic Storage Components, which offered a system of modules that included shelving, cabinets, drawers, table elements, and even specialized units for hi-fi equipment, all housed in a customizable, freestanding grid or available pre-finished to be incorporated into an architectural project. 

The Rosewood Cabinet Series of 1952—later renamed the Thin Edge Group—represents a synthesis of Nelson's approach to modular storage furniture with a heightened attention to quality materials and refined design details.

As beautiful and timeless today as they were 60 years ago, the Thin Edge pieces are a reminder of George Nelson’s brilliance, his belief in honest materials, and his no-nonsense approach to design. He never stopped creating, never stopped thinking, never stopped pushing the company and its designers forward. As Bill N. Lacy, architect and Fellow of the American Institute of Architects noted, "Most people think that George Nelson, Charles Eames, and Eliot Noyes invented industrial design. That is, of course, an exaggeration. George did it without any assistance from the other two."

The refined surfaces of the Nelson Thin Edge Group are complemented by handsome pulls that are graceful to the touch and an elegant set of polished aluminum legs. Pulls are available in white or silver aluminum alloy. Cabinets are available in a variety of veneer finish options. Along with looking and feeling exquisite, this richly veneered buffet also offers a high degree of utility. With 2 adjustable shelves behind its hinged doors and 4 deep drawers, it generously allows for the storage of objects in an efficient, organized manner. Buffet back is non-finished.

ENVIRONMENTAL

Nelson Thin Edge Group cases are made of 64-85% recycled materials and are 88-91% recyclable at the end of their useful life.

When writing about the course of his remarkable 50-year career, George Nelson described a series of creative "zaps"—moments of out-of-the-blue inspiration "when the solitary individual finds he is connected with a reality he never dreamed of."

An early zap came in the 1930s, when he was an architectural student in Rome. Before returning home, an idea struck him: He would travel Europe and interview leading modern architects, hoping to get the articles published in the U.S. He succeeded, and in the process introduced the U.S. design community to the European avant-garde. This set in motion a sequence of what he called "lucky" career breaks that were really the inevitable outcomes of his brilliance as a designer, teacher, and author.

The first break was being named an editor of Architectural Forum magazine. Working on a story there in 1942, he was looking at aerial photos of blighted cities when—zap!—he developed the concept of the downtown pedestrian mall, which was unveiled in the Saturday Evening Post.

Soon after, another zap led to the Storagewall, the first modular storage system and a forerunner of systems furniture. The Storagewall was showcased in a 1945 Lifemagazine article, causing a sensation in the furniture industry. Herman Miller founder D.J. De Pree saw the article and was so impressed that he paid a visit to Nelson in New York and convinced him to be his director of design, which spurred Nelson to found his design firm, George Nelson & Associates. The warm, personal, and professional relationship between Nelson and De Pree yielded a stunning range of products, from the playful Marshmallow Sofa to the first L-shaped desk, a precursor of today's workstation.

Nelson once wrote that Herman Miller "is not playing follow-the-leader." That's one reason why George Nelson & Associates worked with Herman Miller for over 25 years as they shepherded design into the modern era.

During this same period, George Nelson & Associates also created many landmark designs of products, showrooms, and exhibitions for a variety of companies and organizations.

Nelson said that for a designer to deal creatively with human needs, "he must first make a radical, conscious break with all values he identifies as antihuman." Designers also must constantly be aware of the consequences of their actions on people and society. In fact, he declared that "total design is nothing more or less than a process of relating everything to everything." So he said that rather than specializing, designers must cultivate a broad base of knowledge and understanding.

Nelson did so as few are able, and, with the help of well-timed zaps, he helped define modern, humane design.

Coated Metal

Routine Maintenance
For normal cleaning, wash coated metal surfaces with a soft cloth soaked in detergent and warm water; rinse thoroughly and dry. Remove scuff marks from low-gloss coatings with pre-softened paste wax, following the manufacturer’s instructions. Remove scuff marks and scratches from high-gloss coatings using automotive polishing compounds, either liquid or paste. After polishing, apply a pre-softened automotive paste wax to restore original sheen. For assistance in determining the appropriate color and gloss for Herman Miller touch-up paint, contact your Herman Miller Customer Service Representative.

Polished Aluminum

For normal cleaning, apply a pre-softened paste wax to polished aluminum components following the manufacturer’s instructions. In humid atmospheres near salt water, apply the wax once a month. In other areas, apply wax every three months to maintain the appearance of the aluminum.

Wood & Veneer

This includes Herman Miller products finished with wood veneer or recut wood veneer, except the oiled Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman with Rosewood, Oiled Walnut, or Oiled Santos Palisander veneer unless specifically noted.

Normal Cleaning 
Dust regularly with a slightly damp, soft, lint-free cloth. Wipe dry with a dry, soft cloth in the directionof the wood grain.Spills should be immediately wiped up with a damp cloth.

Once a month
Clean the surface with a soft cloth dampened with a quality cleaner formulated for wood furniture. Wipe the surface in the direction of the wood grain to remove dirt and fingerprints. Wipe dry with a clean, dry cloth.

Twice a year
Apply a good quality furniture polish with a soft cloth. Do not use aerosol-powered cleaners or polishes. Also, do not use polishes containing waxes or abrasives, or polishes that are oil based.

Stains
Herman Miller veneers meet strict testing standards for resistance to wear, light, stains, water, and pressure. To reduce the risk of damage, take some precautions: Use coasters for glasses and mugs. If a glass top is added to the veneer surface, be sure it rests on felt pads. Don’t place a potted plant on a veneer surface unless it’s in a water-tight container or in a drip tray.Don’t let vinyl binders stay on a surface for very long. Use protective pads under equipment with “rubber” cushioning feet. Some chemical compounds used in the feet on office equipment, such as printers and monitor stands, may leave permanent stains or marks.

Minor repair of water rings, stains, and scratches
Rub the surface lightly in the direction of the wood grain using No. 000 steel wool. Apply a scratch-removing polish with a color and value that simulate the veneer. If the scratches are deep, consult a professional furniture refinisher.

Other Damage
Wood is susceptible to bruising and scratching from heavy office equipment, so we encourage a protective surface is placed underneath. Objects should be lifted instead of dragged across a surface. Protective pads should be used under items with a rough bottom, like pottery. Denting, caused by extreme pen pressure when writing, can also damage veneer. Use desk pads or some other protection where a lot of paperwork is done. Sunlight can damage veneer as well, so veneer surfaces should not be in direct sunlight. To help a surface age evenly, users can periodically move items on their desks so that the entire surface is exposed to an even amount of light over time. In addition to light, extremely high or low humidity is a damaging environmental factor. Herman Miller suggests maintaining a relative humidity of 35-65 percent.

In addition, Herman Miller does not warrant:
• failure resulting from normal wear and tear
• pilling of textiles
• the matching of colors, grains, or textures of natural materials
• the colorfastness or the matching of colors of textiles, including an exact match to cuttings, samples, or to swatch cards
• damage, marking, or staining of veneer surfaces due to contact with rubber or similar compounds; damage from sharp objects or imprinting from writing instruments, or prolonged exposure to direct sunlight
• discoloration of Lyris™, Lyris 2, and any light-colored textiles due to soiling, stains, or dye transfer from clothing including denim
• foreign objects abrading fabric over time
