Asian Antiques

Our personally selected inventory of Asian antique furniture is offered in a variety of styles, finishes and colors to blend with modern or traditional living environments.  Several buying trips a year to China ensures that our selection is continuously changing and evolving to meet the needs of contemporary lifestyles.

The majority of Chinese furniture at Black Bamboo dates from the mid-19th century, which is known as the Qing (pronounced Ching) Dynasty (1644-1911), the last dynasty in China’s long history of imperial rule. It was under the Qing emperors that a new, wealthy merchant class rose to prominence. Their tastes were different from the refined imperial tastes that had dominated China for centuries. They wanted and could afford homes and furnishings to reflect their status. The merchant class produced more practical, colorful and whimsical styles of furniture.

Each furniture piece offered at Black Bamboo has been carefully restored by craftsman in China, and lacquered by hand using traditional techniques, in order to bring the furniture back to its former glory as part of China’s rich history. The furniture pieces are varied in style, use, age and provincial origin. They could have come from a primitive rural farmhouse or from a sophisticated urban dwelling. The original purpose of practicality, versatility and beauty within the Chinese household holds true today as these furniture pieces fit easily into our 21st century lives.
