Jonathan Olivares's meticulously executed design brings a refined sculptural presence to indoor and outdoor environments alike. The gracefully contoured form is carefully shaped to offer maximum comfort and the die cast aluminum shell is available in a palette of bright, contemporary colors.

Olivares is admittedly obsessed with the Newtonian idea of standing on the shoulders of giants. In this case, the giants are outdoor chairs and mostly metal ones: Harry Bertoia’s wire frame side chair (1958) and Marco Zanuso and Richard Sapper’s Lambda Chair (1959) among others.

Supported by Knoll’s experienced team of furniture and engineering experts, and with these icons in mind, Olivares went forward on an ambitious quest to create a perfect outdoor chair: not too heavy, certainly not too light, more comfortable than anything else, and something smart enough should it make its way inside. The result — a deft arrangement of material, technical craft, form, and color — is so comfortable, durable, and handsome that you don't even think about it. Olivares has hosted the languorous meals and hang outs to prove it: no complaints.

MATERIALS

Suitable for outdoor use. Shell is constructed of die-cast aluminum with outdoor powder coat paint. Leg tenons are integrated in the shell and a subtle reveal transitions the shell to the extruded aluminum legs. Legs are secured to the shell using epoxy and stainless steel fasteners. Chairs stack 6 high on the floor and 10 high on optional dolly. Stacking bumper distributes the chair’s weight over a wide area. Designer’s signature and the KnollStudio logo are located under the seat. Nylon glides included.

At its thinnest, the Olivares Aluminum Chair is three millimeters thick; at its widest points nearly three times that. This keeps the edges from being too sharp, but also allows the aluminum to do its job: stay cool. In fact, the thinness of the center of the chair lets the material adjust quickly to your body temperature; the outside edges in turn help to continuously temper that warming center.

Designer

olivares-jonathan.jpgAfter graduating from Pratt Institute and the New School, Jonathan Olivares established his own design studio Jonathan Olivares Design Research (JODR) in 2006. The firm deploys a multi-angle approach to product and exhibition design, and research.

For the research arm of his design consultancy, Olivares has completed an analysis of the American furniture industry for Domus, and a survey of the history of office chairs, supported by Knoll, and published in 2011 by Phaidon as “A Taxonomy of Office Chairs.” For the Olivares Aluminum Chair, developed for Knoll, Olivares eventually specified a die-cast aluminum shell, a technique that allows for optimum comfort, durability, and weight.

JODR recently designed and presented 2012 exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago entitled “The Outdoor Office” which featured the consultancy’s findings about the design of outdoor work environments. JODR has also designed furniture for Danese Milano and Driade.
