During the winter months in Northern China, domestic life centered around the kang, a hollow brick platform that was heated by hot air running through a flue system from a stove. The Chinese would live on the platform and use low tables, called kang tables, for daily activities such as eating and drinking, playing games or even to read or paint calligraphy.
