The betel leaf holder, a symbol of kinship, consists of a central cone of open metal-work surrounded by a circle of foliate triangles of curling leaves with birds on top. The metal-work is gilded and has inlays of colored glass and is attached to a red lacquer wood stand. Formerly limited to royal use, it is now an accoutrement of novitation processions (becoming a novice Buddhist monk). This to remind on-lookers and participants of the processions of the great scarifices that the Buddha made when he renounced his comfortable princely life, in favour of an austere existence.
