DESCRIPTION

Square Kang Table with Horse Hoof Legs and Rattan Inset in Top. Tables like this one are commonly referred to as kang tables. Northern Chinese residences usually included a kang, a large platform built of bricks or packed earth, that became the center of daily activities (eating, sleeping, painting, reading and even cooking) during the winter. The kang had either a fire pit or stove that burned day and night to keep the kang warm. Mats or carpets were thrown over the top of the bricks so people could be more comfortable. Kang furniture was designed to be shorter in height because most activities on the kang were done in a sitting position. This table would most likely been used for dining with the family sitting on the kang. The top has an inset of woven rattan, which has been replaced. Lacquered by hand in China, using traditional techniques that take up to 60 days, this original piece of antique furniture has been carefully restored by craftsman to bring it back to its former glory as part of China's rich history.
