The technique of Thai massage is the combined influence of several Southeast Asian cultures and medicine traditions and is based on the premise that the body is comprised of infinite pathways upon which lom, or air, travels throughout the body. The pathways, or sen lines, begin at the navel and radiate outward toward the orifices. Sen are often translated as "meridians" or "energy " and are typically manipulated by applying pressure to certain points along them. The therapy would be practiced in conjunction with assisted streching to ease the effects of pain and prevent disease. It is said that the founder of Thai massage was the personal physician of the Buddha over 2,500 years ago. Massage “bibles” such as this one, were typically written down on mulberry paper and traditionally passed on orally from master to pupil over the centuries.
