This spear was hand-carved by the Asmat tribe, which resides in the swamplands of West Papua’s south coast in New Guinea. They are renowned amongst tribal art experts world wide as woodcarvers of the highest order. The Asmat believe that their creator carved their ancestors from trees and gave them the blessing of life, so the carving of wood is considered sacred and regarded as a bridge between the material and spirit worlds. Once notoriously known as head-hunters and cannibals, the Asmat are now known as a peaceful artistic people.
